Krakow Day 1: Walk 1 – Piasel and Nowy Swiat

Piasek, Known as Garbary until the 19^th century, is located west of the old quarter. Its development was hindered in the past by frequent invasions and fortifications. A number of settlements with independent jurisdictions were located between Garbary and Wawel. By the end of the 19^th century Piasek (sand) and Nowy Swiat (new world) began to flourish, with wealthy residence moving in resulting in the best residential architecture to be found within the city.
