Krakow Day 1: Walk 1 – Piasel and Nowy Swiat

Piasek, Known as Garbary until the 19th century, is located west of the old quarter. Its development was hindered in the past by frequent invasions and fortifications. A number of settlements with independent jurisdictions were located between Garbary and Wawel. By the end of the 19th century Piasek (sand) and Nowy Swiat (new world) began to flourish, with wealthy residence moving in resulting in the best residential architecture to be found within the city.
